FREE Tax Preparation Kicks Off January 30th

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day is January 30, 2015

FREE Tax Preparation available for all eligible households

Neptune, NJ.   The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties will provide free tax preparation for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), following a press event held in the Mall Auditorium of the Monmouth Mall at 11am, on January 30, 2015. The event is part of EITC Awareness Day, a nationwide effort to share information about EITC and free tax preparation sites.  Speakers will include legislators and households impacted by the EITC last year.  The event will kick off the FoodBank’s free tax preparation program, which begins onsite immediately after the event and continues until April 15, 2015.

Last year, more than 27 million workers received over $65 billion in EITC refunds. But the IRS estimates that only four out of five workers claim the credit they earn. This leaves billions of dollars on the table each year – money that low to moderate income households can use for groceries, rent, utilities and other bills.   Households that have earned incomes of under $52,427, may be eligible even if they don’t owe any tax, and the EITC can mean as much as a $6,143 federal refund and a $1,208 NJ state refund for households with qualifying children.  But to get it, workers must file a tax return and claim it.

The FoodBank provides free tax preparation services at SCAN in the Monmouth Mall and other sites in Monmouth and Ocean Counties from February through April 15.  Professional Volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue Service through the nationwide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, to find out if households qualify for the EITC and other refundable tax credits.  Tax returns are prepared and e-filed (electronically filed) at no cost.

“The EITC is a major income support program in our nation, lifting 6.5 million families out of poverty last year alone,” says Carlos M. Rodriguez, Executive Director of the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. “The FoodBank’s VITA community volunteers can help you get EITC and the maximum refund you are due at no cost. This is money you can save or use to pay for groceries or other bills, buy that car to get to work, start a business or make a down payment on a home. “
