In the 10 years of Students Change Hunger, The FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties has never seen a school bring in as many pounds as Howell Middle School South did this year. Their creativity and perseverance to win the competition was notable, as they took home The Heavyweight Champion Award (14,810 pounds of food collected), as well as winning their Division and joining the prestigious 5,000 pound club!

This year, the food and funds collected totaled a record-breaking 115,081 pounds, with more than $15,000 in funds. There were 66,000 student competitors this year and all of them contributed to making sure that hunger won’t win here!

The FoodBank would like to thank all the schools and sponsors who made this 10th year memorable and for supporting those who are hungry in our community.

Students Change Hunger is an annual competition run by the hunger relief organizations in New Jersey challenging all students, staff, teachers and parents to think about hunger in their local community by organizing food drives at their school. The challenge takes place from September through December and the schools who bring in the most food are presented awards by their local food bank.

In New Jersey alone, there are over 1.1 million people who don’t know where their next meal will come from on any given day and 400,000 are children.

In Monmouth and Ocean Counties, there are 132,000 people who are food insecure, including 40,000 children.
