The FoodBank added 2 new summer food programs in Ocean County this year where the need was greatest and the sites did well, especially Overcomer’s Kids Camp in Brick at Lanes Mill Elementary, where more than 30 kids were served breakfast and lunch daily. The FoodBank serves close to 40,000 children in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, and 1 in 5 children in Ocean County.

OvercomerCamp7_sm“I can’t tell you what the food service has meant to our program. The hot foods they receive for some of these kids are the only hot meal they receive all day. For others, this camp and your meal service saved them from being stuck in the house all summer,” said Shanda Berry, Director of Overcomer’s Kids Camp in Brick at Lanes Mill Elementary.

Overcomer’s Camp offers an education-based camp, with a special arts program using recyclable materials, and daytrips to a local municipal pool. Scholarships are available to families who cannot afford summer camp.

OvercomersCamp2_smThe Summer Food Service Program provides free breakfasts and lunches to low-income children attending summer recreational programs. More than 700 vulnerable children participate and receive nutritious meals throughout the summer months. Without access to these critical nutrition programs, summer can be a season of hunger for these kids.

Sites receive a daily delivery of pre-packaged breakfasts and/or lunches from a local vendor. The menu is designed by me in accordance with specific nutritional guidelines and pre-approved by the NJDA.
